A Free Psychological Testing Instrument for Use by Clinicians and the General Public

There are a range of symptoms which make up a diagnosis of depression, and the following test is just one of the ways in which your doctor may assess your mood. By all means take this test and share it freely with family and friends, but also take time to read the notes below.

Never self diagnose, because even though you may have the full range of symptoms of depression, it's very possible that the cause may be a medical condition and not depression at all!  Since choice of therapy depends absolutely on getting the diagnosis right, it's essential that although this test may be an indication of depression, you still work with your doctor in order to achieve an accurate diagnosis.

The Meaning of Your Score

As mentioned above, the meaning of this test is absolutely not conclusive.  For example, a low score could indicate not depression at all, but a thyroid or other endocrine disorder!  

Always see your doctor for thorough investigation and accurate diagnosis.

Even if it becomes apparent that you do have depression, please do not listen to those who tell you that you have to learn to cope with it (like the "Living with Depression" style of web site).  Depression is curable, and we now know that it is curable very quickly and usually very easily provided we deliver the correct treatment program.

A Score of  5-9

This bracket represents the lowest scores possible on the test, and indicates a severe level of depression.  Immediate intervention is required and if you have not yet seen your doctor, you must certainly do so now.  Negative stress factors need to be removed from your environment so that you can mentally recharge, and attention needs to be paid to nutrition and lifestyle factors in order to support recovery.  By this stage negative thinking styles have usually become quite ingrained, but can be readily reversed using BMSA (brief, multi-sensory activation).  BMSA does have some contra-indications and is not suitable for use with bi-polar disorder, and should be used with particular care in cases of severe endogenous depression.  In some cases medication, or even hospitalisation, will be essential to the safe recovery of the sufferer.

A Score of 10-18

This bracket indicates depression in the moderate-to-severe range and rapid intervention is essential. Treatment and support should involve investigation of the lifestyle issues which contribute to development of depression, and the depressed thinking styles which have arisen over the course of the depression.  Research has shown that medication is usually completely unnecessary with depression in this range, and in fact the SSRI's appear to have no greater effect than placebo.  With the correct treatment, recovery is possible within days.

A Score of 19-29

This bracket indicates depression in the mild-to-moderate range, but this should never be underestimated - it is still enough to prevent you from living as happy and fulfilling a life as is possible for you.  You should certainly take steps to see your doctor as soon as possible, and to get support for recovery, which will be exactly the same program as described in the previous paragraph.

A Score of 30-40

This bracket indicates the ups and downs experienced in response to typical life events. We all go through times which are challenging, or even tough, whether that's due to illness or accident, relationship problems, work hassles, or whatever.  When people possess good resilience, they tend to bounce back very rapidly and enjoy higher mood levels and much more satisfaction in life, because despite everything, they feel in control of their lives to a large extent.

Extreme Scores

Extremes at either end of the scale are also a cause for concern.  Below 4 could suggest not only the most severe depression, but could also suggest exaggeration, or even indicate histrionic or borderline personality disorders.  Over 50 could indicate denial of depression, "faking it", a life approach which is not considered adaptive and which has been strongly correlated with increasing rates of psychological disorder.
